Indian Institute of Science to Use IIT-JEE Scores for New BSc Course

MUMBAI: The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, a leading institution of higher learning with a strong tradition of research for over a century, has changed its terms for admission into the new Bachelors in Science courses.

The Institute will now admit candidates to its new Bachelors in Science course for the academic session 2011, on the basis of their Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) scores. IISc, Bangalore is starting the four-year undergraduate programme in the coming year. The inaugural batch will begin classes from August 2011 and graduate in July 2015.

As per the reports, Admissions to the programme will be based on the following national examinations: KVPY-SA-2009, KVPY-SB-2010, KVPY-SX (SB+2)-2010, IIT-JEE (2011), AIEEE (2011), and AIPMT (2011).

Faculty at IISc stated, “The programme will be rooted in engineering, but will have touches of social sciences.” They revealed that in their fourth semester, students will be allowed to pick a specialization, which is designed to cater to the vocational interest of a student.

According to the Institute website, the programme is designed as a balanced blend of core science and interdisciplinary topics, to serve as a launching pad for research and doctoral studies in cutting-edge areas in science and technology. The graduates will also be ready for attractive career opportunities in academia and industry.

Sources reported that students will be required to work on a research project for the last two semesters, thereafter the course will conclude. Apart from the IISc, all the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research as well as the Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University will choose its students on the basis of IIT-JEE scores.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was conceived as a ‘Research Institute’ or ‘University of Research’ by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, in the twilight years of the 19th century.
